Getting Children off the Streets in Kenya: The Zawadi Rescue Center
In late September 2023, we rescued 34 children living on the streets in Kenya. This is the story of how it happened.
Across the globe, 16.6 million children have lost one or both parents to HIV; 90% of these orphans are in sub-Saharan Africa. In Kenya, the public social welfare system struggles to manage all of these children. The kids simply have nowhere to turn. It is estimated that 250,000 children are now living on the streets in Kenya.
Sitting in the northeastern shadow of Mount Kenya is the city of Maua. This little city was home to over 50 boys living on the streets. They were so young – twelve, thirteen, fourteen; the youngest was only ten years old. For about 10% of the cost of feeding themselves, they could instead buy a very toxic form of glue. Sniffing the glue gets them high and suppresses their appetite. The boys walk around in a daze all day, temporarily lose their fine motor skills, and are vulnerable to long-term brain damage.
Today, December 3rd is the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD)! This important day is celebrated around the world to help promote the rights of individuals with disabilities so that they can grow and thrive within a more inclusive, equitable, and accessible society.
November 20 is an important day: Universal Children’s Day is celebrated as the anniversary of the day the UN General Assembly created the Universal Declaration of the Rights of the Child in 1959. It also marks the same date 30 years later in 1989 when the UN General Assembly adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) – the most universally accepted human rights treaty. 194 countries have signed up for the UNCRC, meaning that they are bound by law to implement it!

Realized Efforts in Cochabamba: September – December 2018
We recently concluded our time in Cochabamba, Bolivia and have set out to explore South America and get to know other organizations across the continent.Amidst a whirlwind of semi-packed suitcases and organizational details, we wanted to take the opportunity to enumerate the ways the Luena Foundation has made a positive impact on the organizations we’ve chosen to support here since our arrival in September. It seems like it’s been only a short time here in Cochabamba, but we all feel as though we’ve accomplished a lot!
