Food Insecurity Threatens Community Health and Safety
In Nigeria, homelessness and food insecurity are deeply interconnected. Every day, countless children are forced onto the streets not because they want to run away, but because they are desperately hungry. With no access to food, shelter, or support, these children are pushed into survival behaviors: petty theft, drug trafficking, begging, or exploitative labor.
Hunger makes them vulnerable to abuse, criminal recruitment, and psychological trauma. As the food crisis deepens in many communities, more children are becoming homeless, caught in a cycle that is hard to escape and even harder to survive.
To break this cycle, we launched the AKHIN Training for Homeless Youngsters, a three-stage solution that turns homeless youth from victims into empowered changemakers:
- Rescue & Rehabilitation
Homeless children are identified, supported emotionally, and given safe housing and care. - Agricultural & Entrepreneurial Training
In rural farm communities, participants are trained in sustainable organic farming and basic agribusiness skills. They grow food not only for survival but as a livelihood. - Reintegration & Agribusiness Setup
After training, participants receive tools and support to start small agribusinesses. This economic empowerment allows them to be reunited with their families and reintegrate into their communities—no longer as dependents, but as contributors.
Agricultural Training Improves Food Security and Family Stability
The donation from Luena Foundation was used to purchase the critical farming tools and equipment needed to train the first 70 homeless youths in our program. This support made it possible to:
- Launch effective, hands-on agricultural training
- Equip each participant with the means to farm and earn a living
- Lay the foundation for long-term, scalable community impact
This program creates a ripple effect across the community:
Sustainable Change: With every child trained, fewer will face the conditions that drive homelessness in the first place.
Food Security: Participants grow organic food, increasing availability and reducing pressure on households—ensuring fewer children go hungry or end up on the streets.
Family Stability: As trained youths rejoin their families with skills and income potential, entire households benefit from increased food and income security.
Role Models and Peer Influence: Graduates become visible examples of success, encouraging other homeless children to seek help and inspiring community members to invest in solutions.
