Unicorn Crew: Young Changemaker's Grant

Empowering young people to become their own agents of change

In 2022, Luena Foundation debuted our Young Changemaker’s Grant, a program designed to provide small-scale, catalytic seed funding to innovative youth-inspired and youth-driven community projects. Our goal is to invest in and empower young, service-oriented individuals whose unique and innovative projects target their community’s most urgent needs. By identifying young promising talents and enhancing their capacity through mentoring, skilling, networking, and funding, it is our belief and experience that members of our “Unicorn Crew” will find solutions to the challenges that affect them and their communities and become our future generation of leaders around the world.

3 Ways to Become a Changemaker

Fill out a grant application, and if chosen, you will receive funding for a project or organization of your choosing. You will have the opportunity to interact with the organization implementing the project and the co-founders of Luena Foundation.

With a Young Changemaker’s grant from Luena Foundation, Benjamin was able to purchase nine automated blood pressure cuffs and develop educational materials to teach local villagers in rural northern villages about hypertension, a growing epidemic in Belize. The project was done in conjunction with Partners for Medical Relief and the Belizean government.

You can apply to work on one of the projects that Luena Foundation currently has in its pipeline.  Help us to promote and fund this initiative and Luena Foundation will match up to $1,000 towards your project.

By selling tee-shirts at his school, Ryan raised $3,000 to fund the development of a women’s health clinic in rural Camoapa, Nicaragua. Ryan and his father visited the clinic where they were welcomed by the community members and learned about the impact of his efforts.

You are a young person (12-30 years of age) in charge of a small, community-based organization whose efforts are aimed at sparking change in your community. You can fill out a grant application for a small project and if chosen, Luena Foundation will fund the grant and you will be able to implement it in your respective community.

With a Young Changemaker’s grant, Jarvis was able to provide agroforestry techniques and training to local single mothers and widows in a remote village in southwest Cameroon, a forested region that has long been impacted by civil war. With these skills, the local women were able to regenerate their farms to significantly reduce the extension of farming activities into nearby virgin forests, thus protecting local biodiversity. The agroforestry training was also marked with the donation of farming materials including improved seeds for the establishment of food gardens. He also received funding to purchase cassava-grinding machines to help his community to better be able to provide for school fees for the local children.
