Awat Bertrand, a recipient of Luena Foundation’s Young Changemaker’s Grant, used his funding to create a community orchard that teaches children climate adaptation and mitigation strategies. The young people who participate in this initiative gain practical agricultural skills that support healthy orchard growth and help to provide fresh fruit to the community.

Agricultural and Vocational Needs in Cameroon
The availability of fruits is a major problem due to the ongoing armed conflict in northwest Cameroon. This conflict has led to the destruction of the environment, skyrocketed prices, and few safe spaces for children and community members to rest, relax, play, and refresh their minds. Many children and community members want to be trained in grafting fruit trees in order to have more access to fruit, but mainly agricultural technicians have grafting skill at present.
Becoming a Luena Changemaker
Awat is a young Cameroonian who is passionate about helping humanity in the areas of environmental issues and empowering youths. Awat strongly believes in the words of Mahatma Gandhi: “The best way to find oneself is to get lost in the service of others”. He founded Green Globe Organisation to intervene in Environmental education, climate smart agriculture, orchard creation, biodiversity restoration, waste management, and, most importantly, youth entrepreneurship.
Awat applied for and was awarded a Young Changemaker’s Grant from Luena Foundation which allowed him to create a community orchard as a food and educational resource for the population of the Northwest Region of Cameroon.
