Lack of Clean Water Access Increases Diseases and Disrupts Education

In Malawi, a significant portion of the population lacks access to clean and basic sanitation facilities. While the Government is working to improve the water and sanitation infrastructure, challenges remain in providing equitable access across all areas.

A significant number of schools lacks adequate water and sanitation facilities. Community Hope identified five primary schools that had boreholes for water access on site, but all were damaged and currently unusable. Consequently, the students at these schools were using unprotected water sources, such as nearby rivers, which resulted in high incidence of diarrhea and other waterborne diseases such as cholera. This impacts students’ health and school attendance.

Repaired Boreholes Support Community Health and Education

The donation from Luena Foundation was used to procure all materials needed to repair the boreholes at Chilandepa Full Primary School, Chilala Full Primary School, Kachanga Full Primary School, Lipunga Full Primary School, and Ngumbe Primary School. Access to these repaired boreholes has reduced incidences of waterborne diseases among both the students and the wider communities and supports children in being able to attend school more consistently.
