Vulnerable Community Needs Educational Support for Children
Bwesumbu Sub-county is in a remote area of Kasese district in the western part of Uganda. People in the area live below the poverty line as it is described by the UN. 95% of households depend on subsistence farming as they produce for consumption rather than for sale. During 2016, the government of Uganda raided the palace of Rwenzururu Kingdom in Kasese where they clashed with the royal guards of the king. The situation resulted in the killings of more than 100 royal guards, and more than 200 royal guards were arrested along with the king. This situation left many children orphaned and women widowed. In addition, other royal guards abandoned their families out of fear of arrest.
After realizing the challenges affecting orphans and needy children in the community, Hope Harmony Foundation mobilized the community to start Bwesumbu Orphanage Nursery and Primary School to reduce school drop-outs and to help vulnerable children to realize their full potential. The school has managed to accommodate 320 children; however, it lacks necessary equipment like desks, chairs, tables, and textbooks. Our needs assessment determined that providing desks will improve the learning environment and help children concentrate on their studies to improve their academic performance.
Desks and Supplies Help Children Learn Effectively
The donation from Luena Foundation was used to build and deliver 40 desks to Bwesumbu Orphanage Nursery and Primary School and to purchase exercise books and pens for the most vulnerable children so that they can continue with their education.
Currently, the learning environment of vulnerable children has been improved as they are now sitting comfortably in classes. The project has reduced scrambling for space among the children, and it is our hope that these vulnerable children will no longer be at a disadvantage in working to complete their primary level of education.
