Young Mothers Struggle with Financial Insecurity
Mwihoko has a population of approximately 150,000 as of 2024. Residents face significant economic challenges, with many earning below $2 per day. Some residents are young women that have been abandoned by their husbands and are living in deplorable conditions, often without a reliable income. Many have survived gender-based violence and are struggling to raise their children on their own. Without empowering these women to secure job opportunities, gender-based violence continues, and they and their children continue to struggle in a cycle of poverty.
Training Opens New Employment Opportunities and Helps Secure Family Livelihoods
The donation from Luena Foundation was used to develop and offer a six-month vocational training program so that women could develop skills in welding and fabrication. These skills will help the women to secure employment or start their own businesses, earning an income that will help with food and school expenses for their families. In addition, after completing the program, five skilled women were hired to carry out the welding, painting, and installation needed for doors, windows, and ventilators at a new building at Kiserem Epilepsy Foundation.
