Hunger Presents Barrer to Education

In the rural village of Olasi, many families live in poverty and struggle to meet the most basic needs of their children—including daily nutrition. At Our Lady of the Visitation Preschool, we care for 70 young children, most of whom come from households where food is scarce and regular meals are not guaranteed. Hunger remains a major barrier to early childhood education in this region. Children often arrive at school with empty stomachs, making it difficult for them to concentrate, participate, or enjoy learning. Without proper nourishment, their growth, health, and cognitive development are also at serious risk. This feeding program was established to directly address these challenges, ensuring that every child receives at least two nutritious meals each day—building not just stronger bodies, but brighter futures.

Feeding Program Supports Nutrition and Effective Learning

The donation from Luena Foundation was used to purchase a substantial supply of essential foodstuffs for our feeding program at Our Lady of the Visitation Preschool in Olasi. These funds were used to buy staple items such as rice, beans, soybeans, sorghum, sugar, flour, maize, vegetable oil, and spaghetti, which form the foundation of the daily meals we provide to our 70 preschool children. These nutritious ingredients have allowed us to prepare both morning porridge and hearty lunches, ensuring that each child receives two wholesome meals every school day. The donation not only filled our storeroom but also filled the hearts and stomachs of our young learners, providing relief to their families and bringing dignity and consistency to their early learning experience.

“Before, my child would come home crying because of hunger. Now, he runs to school each morning, knowing he will eat well and play with friends.”
Achieng, a parent

“I like the food. My best is the rice and beans. I feel strong!”
Emmanuel, age 5
