Food Security Relies on Effective Farming
The main economic activities in the rural communities of Kasese District are agricultural, and the majority of residents are subsistence farmers. Many smallholder farmers are widows or young mothers whose families are vulnerable. To support the economic and nutrition needs of their children, these farmers need training in sustainable agriculture and access to tools and seeds.
Garden Development Supports Nutrition and Community Wellbeing
The donation from Luena Foundation was used to purchase seeds and gardening tools and to provide training in sustainable agriculture to community members. With these resources, READT and the participating farmers started two vegetable gardens, one each at Nyangonge and Katooke Primary Schools. This training and the vegetables that the new gardens are producing are improving the nutrition status of children and women, especially pregnant mothers, enhancing gardening skills and practices, improving food security for vulnerable families, and strengthening children’s performance in school.
Meet our Partner Community-Based Organization
Rwenzori Environment and Agriculture Development Technologies (READT) is a community-based organization founded in 2009 by a group of smallholder farmers in Kasese, Western Uganda. READT work with farmer groups at community level to provide them with the necessary training and technology to increase their production and value addition. We focus on the most marginalized groups, especially widows, young mothers, and children. We support these women to form self-led collectives and provide them with the training and resources to succeed.
