Barriers to Clean Water Access
For the past two years, these two village communities have been struggling to have access to clean and safe water. Residents often have to walk very long distances, between 5 to 6 kilometers, to get water for drinking and other uses like cooking and bathing. In addition, these distant water sources are not always clean, and as such, many people suffered from waterborne diseases such as cholera and typhoid. This affected their health, hence they were not able to participate in development works.
Piped Connections Improve Access and Health
The donation from Luena Foundation was used to connect a fresh piped water supply in each of these two villages. The cost covered a proportion of the expenses for water connection materials such as HDPE pipes, compline, elbow, standpipes, solvent cement and cobra taps, three cement bags, and a water connection fee to Water Users Association. The two water facilities are newly constructed and fully functional, and an estimated population of four thousand people will benefit from these fresh water points.
