School Lacked Dedicated Facilities to Prepare Food Safely
Kwezi Child Foundation provides education, scholastic materials, and meals to over 200 children. The organization also supports children living with albinism, an inherited condition that leads to someone having very light skin, hair, and eyes, due to low levels of melanin in their bodies. This condition usually causes a lot of discomfort, especially for people living in poverty who are unable to access essential things to help minimize the effect of the sun on their skins. A special report by the Monitor (read here) reported that girls living with albinism in Kayunga District were easily lured into early marriages and later deserted by their husbands. Given this background, Kwezi Child Foundation is supporting 48 children (32 girls, 16 boys) with scholastic materials, sunscreen, hats, and clothes that protect them from the sun.
Kwezi Nursery and Primary School had no permanent place to prepare food apart from the little space around the school compound. During the rainy seasons this space could be filled with stagnant water, which would prevent staff from being able to prepare food. On hot days as well, it could be very difficult for staff to prepare school meals since there was no protection from the sun. With no cooking stove, food had to be prepared over an open fire. It was very risky to cook in the space that is so close to the children’s playground since they were at risk of being burned. Some days were too windy to manage the cooking fire safely; if the staff waited for safer conditions, there would be a delay so that food wasn’t served on time.
New Kitchen Improves Safety, Hygiene, and Nutrition for Students
The donation from Luena Foundation was used to build a dedicated kitchen building, fully enclosed but with proper ventilation. The new kitchen includes a wood and charcoal stove for cooking and facilities for safe food storage.
