School Latrines Needed Renovation and Expansion

Kwezi Child Foundation provides education, scholastic materials, and meals to over 200 children. The organization also supports children living with albinism, an inherited condition that leads to someone having very light skin, hair, and eyes, due to low levels of melanin in their bodies. This condition usually causes a lot of discomfort, especially for people living in poverty who are unable to access essential things to help minimize the effect of the sun on their skins. A special report by the Monitor (read here) reported that girls living with albinism in Kayunga District were easily lured into early marriages and later deserted by their husbands. Given this background, Kwezi Child Foundation is supporting 48 children (32 girls, 16 boys) with scholastic materials, sunscreen, hats, and clothes that protect them from the sun.

Kwezi Nursery and Primary School lacked good WASH facilities. Hygiene in the school was very bad; the two existing latrines were in poor condition. Sometimes children were forced to open defecation and urinating in the nearby bushes surrounding the school which created sanitation problems. These young children were at risk of dropping out of school due to diseases and infections.

Improved Sanitation and Health Helps Children Stay in School

The donation from Luena Foundation was used to build new WASH facilities, including two pit latrine stalls for girls, two pit latrines and urinals for boys, and one pit latrine stall for school staff. This project has improved hygiene and health by reducing the risk of diseases such as malaria, typhoid, and cholera.
