Lack of School Supplies Inhibits Learning
Rural Seeds Primary School is found in Dibanda mile 14 village community, a farming community in the Southwest Region of Cameroon with a growing population of over 10,000 inhabitants. The inhabitants are poor farmers who rely on subsistence agriculture for their livelihood. Most families earn less than two dollars a day and live below the UN poverty line. Illiteracy and birth rates in the community are quite high, with children and women being the most vulnerable. Due to poverty, many children go to school without any learning materials and have to struggle to remember what they’re being taught in their lessons. It is common to see kids in class with just a single exercise book serving four different subjects, with no pencil, pen, eraser, or textbook.
Access to Learning Materials Keeps Children in School
The donation from Luena Foundation was used to provide school bags containing school materials (pens, pencils, rulers, erasers, assorted exercise books, lunch box, etc.). The project was deemed of high importance by the community and beneficiaries because it has enabled 70 internally displaced children to resume schooling. This has provided hope, improved learning capabilities, and shows a lifeline to a future out of poverty.
