Insufficient Toilet Facilities Place Children at Risk
Rosa Academic Primary School is a lone primary school in Bolifamba village community, which is mostly attended by very poor village children, including orphans and IDPs (internally displaced people), aged 5-12 years. A total of 340 pupils attend Rosa Academic Nursery & Primary School, of which 203 are girls and 137 boys. The establishment of the school seven years ago improved attendance for children who had no school or had to walk long distances to another school.
The school is managed by the Parent Teachers Association who are doing their best to ensure these vulnerable children have access to education by struggling to raise funds to pay six teachers employed to teach in the school. The community is unable to raise enough funds to construct a toilet facility for the school. The present pit (one meter deep) that is used as a toilet was dug seven years ago. Students now prefer nearby farms and streams as the toilet is full, exposed, and at risk of collapse. This affects the hygiene and sanitation condition in the school negatively due to smell and pollution in the area around the school campus.
Latrine and Classroom Furniture Improve Health and Education
The donation from Luena Foundation and Sumar Lakhani Foundation was used to construct a four compartment, gender-sensitive pit-latrine. Access to this latrine on site at the school has enhanced education by increasing classroom retention rates, improved hygiene and sanitation, and eliminated preventable diseases and deaths resulting from poor hygiene and sanitation. The donation was also used to provide classroom furniture for the school, including 30 desks, 2 tables, and 4 chairs.
