With Limited Resources, School Struggles to Facilitate Classroom Learning
Kasese District is one of the remote districts in Uganda with the highest number of orphans and vulnerable children. 85% of the population in Kasese district live below the UN poverty line. Nyamwamba Division has a growing population of about 7,000 inhabitants who are poor and have a low income. There is a high rate of illiteracy in the division, especially in Kigoro and a slum area where pupils drop out of school early.
The community started St. Adolf Model School to try to improve literacy, especially among orphans and other vulnerable children. The school lacks essential materials like desks, which has led the pupils to always compete for the space during classes. In addition, the school does not have textbooks and teachers’ guides, which makes it difficult for teachers to prepare lesson plans and a scheme of work.
RWETCODE had been supporting vulnerable, school-going children through providing sanitary pads, exercise books and other scholarly materials in order for them to access education. Subsequently, the school management committee consulted RWETCODE to present the issues associated with this lack of materials. During the meeting at the school, it was resolved that providing desks, textbooks and exercise books was the most pressing need at the school.
Desks and Books Support Effective Learning Environment
The donation from Luena Foundation was used able to supply St. Adolf Model School with 26 desks and textbooks and to support the neediest children with exercise books to be able to continue with their education. This has improved the learning environment by reducing the need for students to compete for desk space, allowing both teachers and children to focus and engage with lessons. In addition, providing textbooks has created an environment where children are accessing education materials regardless of their socio-economic background.
