Period Poverty Disrupts Education
A high number of girls in these rural areas drop out of school due to the stigma around menstruation and because of their inability to access or afford menstrual products. Research shows that 80% of children who have started menstruation miss school during their periods due to lack of appropriate materials to use during their periods. 30% of the menstruating girls drop out of school due to period poverty.
Menstrual Kits Help Girls Stay in School
The donation from Luena Foundation was used to purchase 100 reusable menstrual kits. These kits were distributed to needy girls in schools. We trained these girls on how to use the pads, the importance of hygiene during menstruation, and reproductive health. We believe that these girls will not miss school again because of periods. The kits have enough pads to take them through their period, and they can last for up to two years. The project has helped girls stay in school, succeed academically, and reach their full potential.
