Multiple Barriers to Safe and Affordable Education in Kasese District
Some orphans and vulnerable children are unable to afford school fees and the supplies necessary to attend school. At-risk children who do manage to enroll in school face additional barriers to advancing in the educational system, including the costs of registering with certain national authorities and of completing the national primary leaving examination so that they can proceed to secondary school.
Separately, there is a risk of injury, death, or property damage to Shine Preparatory School from lightning strikes due to weather in the region.
Improved Safety and Access for At-Risk Students
The donation from Luena Foundation was used to fund four related efforts at Shine Preparatory School. First, a lightning arrestor and conductor was installed at a classroom block to prevent deaths, injuries, and property damage from lightning. Second, nine out-of-school children were identified during the Rwenzori Mountain hike in September 2022, and the donation provided support for four of these children to enroll at Shine School. Third, the donation funded practice exams to help prepare primary pupils (candidate class) for the upcoming national primary leaving examination (PLE) that will qualify them to advance into secondary school. Finally, the donation allowed students to register on the education management information system (EMIS), so they can get a learners’ identification number (LIN), as well as register with National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) to get the National Identification Number (NIN), that is required to process the national identity cards (IDs).
