Schools Abandoned Due to Civil Unrest
Imagine a situation and the fear of the unknown where children are expected to return to a rural community school which was abandoned five years ago because of the civil unrest in the English speaking regions of Cameroon. Many schools were burnt down, teachers were threatened, and many families were displaced to other communities. Those who have decided to stay in these interior villages have no means to provide proper education to the children. Since the civil war intensified in Cameroon, many children have not had access to a school, and those who could be sent to far away schools lack materials such as exercise books, textbooks, pens, uniforms, school desks, and other learning materials.
Refurbished School Improves Education Access
With the donation from Luena Foundation, we were able to clean the abandoned school compounds and then purchase and provide school furniture, books, tables, etc. and encourage volunteer local teachers. This provided an interactive educational environment for more than 400 children and even helped children from surrounding villages to successfully attend school in a conducive environment.
