Lack of Assets Leaves Families at Risk
Poor families of orphans and vulnerable children (OVCs) lack productive assets. These families are prone to many shocks of life, from disease to deprivation of food, education, healthcare, and decent housing. Productive assets like goats can increase household incomes and resilience to shocks. Evidence shows that access to productive assets positively impact the livelihoods of very poor people.
New Opportunities to Support Family Expenses
Luena Foundation’s donation was used to purchase 26 female goats and 2 bucks that were given to OVC families. In the livelihood context of poor rural communities, goats are a revered family asset, often termed as the “poor man’s cow”. Goats can support family income that may be used to manage household expenses, increase consumption of nutritious food for the children, or save to invest in education or new opportunities.
