Many Obstacles to Child Education in Nairobi’s Informal Settlements

In Kenya, most of the informal settlements are associated with poor people who do casual labor to feed their family and live below a dollar a day. With the rate of non-communicable diseases, HIV/AIDS, and cholera outbreaks because of poor sanitation in the slums, most of the children identified are orphans or vulnerable due to the death of one parent or a run-away parent. These children are either taken for child labor to help sell items at roadsides or others have run away from home and become street children.  Despite the Government of Kenya reducing the fee levies in primary and secondary schools, orphans and children from vulnerable families can not afford $24 to pay for school fees and primary feeding program.

School Fees Facilitate Security and Education for Children

The donation from Luena Foundation was used to pay fees for one year for 69 OVCs to attend different primary schools and levels. With the help of peer educators, we will be monitoring the students’ attendance and performance each term. Most of the assisted children have been redeemed from the temptation of being street children or going out to search for scrap metals which leads most of the young children to drop out of school. With educational support to the OVCs their self-esteem and wellbeing are improved.
