High Health Risks for Internally Displaced Persons
Bolifamba village community has a growing population of over 10,000 inhabitants, most of whom are peasant farmers. 95% of families in the community earn less than US $2 a day and live below the poverty line as defined by the UN. Illiteracy and the birth rate in the community are quite high with girls being most vulnerable. Bolifamba village community is one of the host communities for internally displaced persons (IDPs) who have fled from an ethnic-based civil war affecting other parts of the country. Their living conditions are deplorable as families typically share a single room in wooden hovels that have neither electricity nor running water. As a result, they have little food security and are plagued by constant health problems. Those mostly affected are women and children, particularly IDPs who have come to the village in hopes of safety and education for their children.
Food and Surgery Alleviate Conditions for a Displaced Family
The donation from Luena Foundation was used to sponsor a life-saving operation for a young IDP woman who was in critical condition due to a ruptured appendix. The donation also provided food stuffs for the IDP family for three months, improving their food security.
