Lack of Materials Puts Children’s Education at Risk
Education is a fundamental right, yet millions of children worldwide face significant barriers to accessing quality education. Vulnerable children, particularly those from low-income and internally displaced families in the communities of Mbuku and Dionkong, Bangem Subdivision, are severely in need of basic school supplies such as exercise and text books, school shoes and uniforms, school bags, writing materials, and other essential resources. Even after the 2024/2025 school year had begun, several children who attend the Unity Primary School Mbuku lacked essential school supplies. According to the school’s head teacher, most of the children lack these items due to a high level of economic hardship affecting their parents, who are peasant farmers and crisis-affected families. The head teacher also stated that many children repeatedly avoided coming to school last school year due to the embarrassment of lacking these essential school supplies, and this led to increased absenteeism and even caused 6 children to drop out of school.
Fee Payment and Supplies Keep Children in School
The donation from Luena Foundation was used to purchase educational materials and supplies for students and to transport them to the school. These materials included school uniforms and shoes, school bags, exercise books and writing materials. The project also provided teaching aids to teachers of the school such as textbooks, while some orphans also had their school fees paid.
