Community Need for Training, Wellbeing, and Nutrition
The availability of fruits is a major problem due to the ongoing armed conflict in northwest Cameroon. This conflict has led to the destruction of the environment, skyrocketed prices, and few safe spaces for children and community members to rest, relax, play, and refresh their minds. Many children and community members want to be trained in grafting fruit trees in order to have more access to fruit, but mainly agricultural technicians have grafting skill at present. A community orchard was proposed as a solution that could empower community members with essential skills in grafting, rooting, and marcotting; educate children in climate adaptation and mitigation strategies; and provide free fruit in a peaceful space where children can refresh their minds from the ongoing war, play, and commune with other members of the community.
Orchard Planting Brings New Support to Community
The donation from Luena Foundation was used to purchase high-yielding grafted fruit tree saplings, manure, a training manual, a signboard and t-shirts to represent the orchard, and transportation for all items to the land where the orchard is being established.
