Internally Displaced Families Lack Economic Stability
The on-going socio-political crisis in the North West and South West Regions of Cameroon has had devastating effects on the population in general. In the North West Region at one point from 2019 – 2022, which saw the peak of the crisis, some villages were victims of arson, and some families lost their properties as well as lives, leading to hopelessness, frustration, and psychosocial torture. As a result of all these, some villagers moved to other places for safety. Many of these victims settled in Bamenda, the headquarters of the North West Region of Cameroon.
Care – Hope Education conducted a needs assessment with community leaders in order to identify sustainable livelihood programs which could help families continue to provide for their children without necessarily depending on external support. Through this assessment, it was identified that empowering parents through sustainable skills and economic activities like poultry farming would have a significant impact on the overall wellbeing of these families and sustainable livelihood.
Poultry Farming Provides Critical Income for Families
The donation from Luena Foundation was used to provide 20 families with 15 chicks, 1 feeder, 1 drinker, a packet of medication, and a bag of feed per family. This project helps the families to raise income, which allows them to provide for their children’s school needs and other basic needs of the family. Poultry farming is admired by many because of the high demand for chicken and the manure that chickens produce. These farmers are already able to sell some chickens and have started to use some of the income to buy some school items like books and pens.
