Urgent Public Health Needs Put Education at Risk
In 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Uganda also experienced an outbreak of cholera disease that was reported to have spread to 61 districts of Uganda with a total of 8,498 cases. This alerted the Ministry of Health to check facilities in all public places, including schools. During the ministry check, our latrines were found to be in very poor condition, and the Ministry advised us either to work on renovating the latrines or to close the school. Closing the school would have left 252 children without education for that year.
Renovations Serve Both Public Health and Education Needs
The donation from Luena Foundation was used to fully renovate eight latrine cubicles and eight shower cubicles for both the boys and the girls wings of the school. This allowed the school to remain open and continue educating students in an environment with effective sanitation and hygiene.
