Lack of Access to Medical Services Endangers Health and Safety
Mwihoko has a population of approximately 150,000 as of 2024. Residents face significant economic challenges, with many earning below $2 per day. The community struggles with inadequate access to basic services like hospitals. In Kenya, more than one million people are suffering from epilepsy, and only 20% can afford anti-epilepsy medicines; the rest cannot afford due to stigma and poverty. Many Kenyans with epilepsy are prone to seizures and have to be on medication 24/7. Without proper medication, individuals with epilepsy face increased risks of injury, social stigma, and decreased productivity.
Medical Camp Provides Access to Medication and Other Public Health Services
The donation from Luena Foundation was used to purchase anti-epileptic drugs that were provided to patients at no cost during a medical camp that Kiserem Epilepsy Foundation held in collaboration with local healthcare providers and a primary school in the neighborhood. The event was open to the public, and, in addition to offering critical medications, the medical camp allowed community members to test their blood sugar and blood pressure along with voluntary HIV/AIDS testing and free EEG testing for people with epilepsy.
