Insufficient Latrines Place Both Health and Education at Risk

Bughayo Light Moon Nursery and Primary School faced a pressing issue that threatened the health, safety, and dignity of its students – poor latrines. The school’s inadequate sanitation facilities led to a range of problems that affected the entire community. The lack of proper latrines forced the students to practice open defecation, which exposed them to serious health risks. This unhygienic practice contaminated the soil, water, and air, making students vulnerable to diseases like diarrhea and typhoid fever. The poor latrines not only affected the students’ health but also their educational wellbeing. The unpleasant and unsanitary conditions made it difficult for the pupils to focus, leading to poor performance. Some parents would send their children to other schools instead, requiring them to walk long distances, in order to have healthier facilities during the school day.

Latrines Improve Health, Safety, and Attendance

The donation from Luena Foundation was used to construct a new pit latrine for improved hygiene and sanitation for over 350 pupils. This has not only improved their health and hygiene but also increased the willingness of the community to entrust their children to the school since health and safety issues have been addressed. We expect this to support long-term enrollment, allowing children to complete high school.
