Limited Diagnostic Tools Make Effective Treatment Challenging
Chifundo Epilepsy Foundation was founded in 2019 with the mission of defeating epilepsy in children and women in underserved communities. It serves more than 600 beneficiaries, including 200 children who rely on the Epilepsy Clinics for their life-saving anti-seizure medication. However, without proper diagnosing, it is a great challenge for clinicians to prescribe the correct antiepileptic drugs. Effective diagnosis of epilepsy requires an electroencephalogram (EEG), which is not easily available in Malawi.
Critical Technology Allows Effective Diagnosis
The donation from Luena Foundation funded the purchase of an electroencephalogram (EEG) machine for an Epilepsy Centre to aid proper diagnosis, allowing clinicians to give children the right anti-seizure medication. Chifundo Epilepsy Foundation is now a center for diagnosing and treating epilepsy, and it is the only Epilepsy Centre in Malawi to use technology towards defeating epilepsy. Because of this machine, the government of Malawi also relies on the Foundation. The Ministry of Health refers children to our Epilepsy Centre for diagnosis, including those who come to the hospital in a coma, so that Chifundo can detect the seizures as early as possible to prevent brain damage.
