Remote Communities Lack Access to Sufficient Educational Facilities
The community has a high rate of school dropouts, which leaves youth vulnerable and lacking skills. Musandama is located in a remote area where services are minimal, further hindering development. The community has only one government primary school which serves almost 700 pupils. Most pupils live at some distance from the school, making it difficult to attend regularly, so many children drop out or never attend school. In addition, the geographic terrain of the area does not allow children of 5-12 years old to move long distances on a daily basis. The community came up with the idea of starting Kisonde Community Primary School, which serves a population of 300 pupils from vulnerable households. The school started with 4 classes and 5 teachers from the community of Kisonde II who teach voluntarily. The school lacks infrastructure, including sanitation facilities; it had only one dilapidated latrine that was shared with the adjacent church.
New Latrines Support Sanitation and Education
The donation from Luena Foundation was used to construct a 3 stance toilet at a primary school in Ntoroko district. The project aimed at improving the sanitation and hygiene of vulnerable children and their teachers, which, in turn, improves the learning environment and the children’s performance and improves the enrolment and attendance of vulnerable children.
