Limited Access to Clean Water Threatens Health and Education
Public schools in Tanzania struggle to provide quality education due to overcrowded classrooms (60-100 students per teacher), inadequate facilities, and a lack of supplies. This leads to low teacher motivation and poor student performance. Many teachers experience burnout and lack the resources needed to teach effectively. School toilets are often insufficient, unclean, and lack clean water, causing health issues for children that can spread to their families and communities. Despite these conditions, many families send their children to public schools due to financial constraints, while only a few wealthy families can afford expensive international schools.
Bright Future School faced a significant water supply issue, with running water available only one to two times a week and the nearest source located 5 kilometers away. This limited access prevents proper sanitation and hygiene in the toilets, affecting the health of students and staff. It disrupts essential activities like handwashing, cooking, and cleaning, leading to lower attendance, reduced performance, and a higher risk of waterborne diseases. Improving water access is vital for creating a healthier and safer learning environment.
Access to Clean Water Provides Multiple Benefits for Community
The donation from Luena Foundation was used to drill a deep borehole well and install a pump. Having a sustainable water supply at the school ensures access to safe drinking water for the students and proper sanitation and hygiene in the school toilets, benefiting the overall health of students and staff. It also supports daily activities such as handwashing, cooking, and cleaning, which are essential for maintaining a safe learning environment.
Additionally, the water is used for vegetable gardens, trees, and school gardens. The school has been able to save funds from their water bill, which was previously about 300,000 TSH (approximately US $110) each month. This money has been directed towards school development, including the construction of new classrooms for future use. Lastly, the school has been able to provide water to a few families around the school, neighbors who do not have running water in their homes.
Meet our Partner Community-Based Organization
Hydromissions provides safe water using methods appropriate to each individual community. In most cases, we train volunteers from the community on how to drill shallow borehole wells and build hand-pumps using locally available material.
