Remote Tribes Lack Access to Services
In India, the social structure is often discussed in terms of caste, a system that has historically divided people into hierarchical groups. The Scheduled Tribes are groups recognized by the Indian Constitution as having distinct cultural, social, and historical backgrounds. They often live in forested or remote areas and have their own languages, customs, and traditions. Many tribal communities face poverty due to limited access to resources and economic opportunities. Access to quality education and healthcare is limited. Schools and healthcare facilities are often distant, and there’s a shortage of culturally appropriate services. Tribal communities often face discrimination and social exclusion from mainstream society, impacting their ability to integrate or benefit from national development.
This community is comprised of the Konda Dora Scheduled Tribe. In the mountains, this village suffers from scarcity of drinkable water. The area faces significant challenges, including poverty, illness, and low literacy rates. With 100 families residing in the village, the lack of access to clean water profoundly affects their daily lives. Community members, especially children and women, had to navigate rugged terrain to reach a distant pond for their drinking water. Unfortunately, these natural water sources, such as rivers, lakes, and ponds, are frequently contaminated by untreated sewage, industrial waste, and agricultural runoff, introducing harmful bacteria, viruses, heavy metals, and chemicals.
Access to Clean Water Supports Health and Safety
The donation from Luena Foundation was used to drill a deep well and install a manual hand pump. This new well will significantly enhance the quality of life for the community, providing a reliable source of water for drinking, cooking, cleaning, and bathing. It is anticipated that access to clean water will reduce the prevalence of illness, as residents will be better hydrated and able to prepare and consume food and water safely.
Meet our Partner Community-Based Organization
Hydromissions provides safe water using methods appropriate to each individual community. In most cases, we train volunteers from the community on how to drill shallow borehole wells and build hand-pumps using locally available material.
