Lack of Clean Water Access Disrupts Education

Musandama III is a remote village in Ntoroko District with a high number of vulnerable households. 90% are smallholder farmers who use rudimentary tools, and they earn less than 1 dollar per day to support their households. Therefore, 90% live below the poverty line according to the UN. The topography of the area leads children to miss classes when they need to fetch water from distant places, which can be difficult to get to or not have clean water. Girls, especially adolescents, also may miss classes during their menstrual periods due to lack of water at school. These absences lead to poor academic performance.

New Well Supports Hygiene and Education

The donation from Luena Foundation was used to construct a protected well in Musandama III, which benefited 600 school-going children and 100 households through increased access to clean water. The project has improved sanitation and hygiene of children at school, thereby reducing water-borne diseases, and increased school enrollment and attendance.
