More Families Displaced and Impoverished by Earthquakes
The Türkiye earthquakes resulted in over one million people being rendered homeless, and many families, particularly refugee families, lost everything they possessed. Turkey hosts 3.7+ million Syrian refugees and was already facing enormous economic challenges, including skyrocketing food and housing prices. Turkey has struggled to provide adequate services, education, and employment for millions of additional people, and in particular housing and shelter.
The five February 2023 earthquakes further exacerbated the plight of the refugees in Turkey, creating a crisis within a crisis. Many refugees who had been displaced multiple times in Syria before coming to Turkey have been displaced once again. Over half a million people are still living in tents and container cities. Many Turkish families also lost all that they have.
Many families fled the earthquake zones with literally the clothes on their back. Conditions are extremely precarious for impoverished refugees residing in cramped housing conditions in low-income neighborhoods, bereft of many basic needs for their children. The recent economic troubles in Turkey have rendered the situation of Syrian refugees and the poor in Turkey even more precarious.
Food Packages Support Vulnerable Families
The donation from Luena Foundation was used to provide emergency food aid to one hundred families who suffered either loss of shelter or loss of income due to the February 2023 earthquakes and the economic crisis affecting the country.
