Socio-Political Crisis Leaves Children Without Access to Education
Cameroon has been facing an under-reported socio-political crisis in the two English speaking regions of the country for the past 7 years. The crisis led to a deadly confrontation between separatist fighters and the state armed forces, which has claimed the lives of more than 7000 persons, destroyed more than 200 villages, and displaced more than 2 million persons into the forests or neighboring French speaking communities for safety. Dschang, a French speaking neighboring city in the west region of Cameroon, received more than 15,000 internally displaced persons, including many children. Sadly, most of the internally displaced children who relocated to Dschang for safety lost their birth certificates when they fled or when their homes were burnt during the crisis. The absence of birth certificates prevented the children from being enrolled in schools or vocational training centers or from registering for public exams.
Birth Certificates Help Children Continue Their Education
The donation from Luena Foundation was used to process birth certificates for 100 internally displaced primary school children in group 1 and 2 government primary school in Dschang. This project gave the children a chance to sit for the national first school and common entrance examinations for the 2022/2023 academic year.
