Vulnerable Children Face Multiple Risks
Kawangware village is one of the biggest slums in Kenya. It has a high rate of alcohol brewing and other illicit activities that lead to the separation of families and, in the worst cases, to death. This has increased rate of orphans, widow/widowers, and neglect of children, which leads many children to the streets to look for help. In addition, this region stigmatizes children with special needs as they believe it is either African magic or a bad omen. Over the long term, these dynamics have affected the education of most of the pupils in the village and has contributed to the rate of illiteracy.
New Supplies Improve Child Wellbeing and Support Education
The donation from Luena Foundation was used to purchase beds, special wheelchairs, exercise books, and to pay allowances for twelve teachers. These resources have supported students such that their school performance has improved compared to previous years.
Meet our Partner Community-Based Organization
Aswani Kizito’s Project of Hope is a project to build a new home for orphaned children who are currently living in the slums of Kawangare and who so deserve the care and attention we have to offer them. We want to create a Children’s Centre, based in a new community development in Kitengela, that offers them the space in which to can grow and develop, receive an education, and eventually become productive members of society.
