Lack of Latrines Puts Children’s Education at Risk
Vienna Primary School had no sufficient latrine or toilet since one latrine had collapsed due to heavy rains in late December 2019. Both boys and girls and teachers were using one damaged latrine or sharing a neighbor’s small latrine. The lack of safe and effective latrines led to children at Vienna Primary school practicing open defecation, putting their health at risk, and missing school which affected their learning and accounted for poor class performance for the majority of the students. In particular, Vienna Primary School has the highest female student population of the schools in the community, and young girls are especially prone to dropping out of school when they do not have access to good sanitation facilities.
New Latrines Improve Student Hygiene and Education Access
The donation from Luena Foundation was used to build new latrine facilities, including two latrine stalls for girls, one for staff, and two for boys, including urinals. By building latrines, open defecation is reduced; students are able to stay in school longer as they do not need to leave school in search of a toilet or latrine; and the hygiene of the school and entire community is improved and dignity is restored.
