Community Struggles to Reestablish Safe and Adequate Educational Facilities
Cameroon has been facing an under-reported socio-political crisis in the two English speaking regions of the country for the past 7 years. The crisis led to a deadly confrontation between separatist fighters and the state armed forces, which has claimed the lives of more than 7000 persons, destroyed more than 200 villages, and displaced more than 2 million persons into bushes or neighboring French speaking communities for safety. The Mombo rural community is one of the communities that were deserted by the socio-political crisis, which also destroyed the lone primary school serving the Mombo rural community. When the inhabitants of Mombo decided to relocate back to their community, they gradually gained support to construct two classrooms so that their children would have a safe and conducive space for learning. The newly constructed classrooms had just 3 benches each to accommodate the children. This led to overcrowding of children on fewer benches, noisy classrooms, poor class work participation, and poor academic performances of the children.
New School Benches Improve Learning Conditions for Children
The donation from Luena Foundation was used to provide 20 quality benches to the children of Mombo primary school, impacting 120 primary school children with a safe and conducive environment for learning.
