Food Insecurity and Barriers to Family Livelihood
In Ndibse Village, women are expected to grow sufficient food for household consumption and also support their families economically, but they lack the resources and skills to do so. For many years, these women have been carrying on farming activities with very limited resources such as improved seeds, farming tools and equipment, coupled with lack of training on climate-smart farming practices. As a result, they are impacted negatively in providing the quantity of food needed in their homes as well as earning an income from their farming activity to support themselves and their families. This has caused food insecurity and household instability, especially for children who often have to go to school without eating.
Training and Tools Support Families and the Environment
The donation from Luena Foundation was used to empower 28 vulnerable women by training and supporting them on regenerative agricultural practices. The training included donation of farming materials to the women, such as tools and improved seeds, for free. The women started with maize, okra, and Irish and sweet potato farms and are adding carrot and cabbage farms. Part of the funds were also used to transport all project materials to the community.
The project was highly appreciated by the entire Ndibse village and particularly by the 28 women and their 67 children who sang songs of joy throughout this first phase of the project. This was because one of the biggest barriers to achieving some level of food security and their children’s education was removed by this project, as it has ensured the cultivation of nutritious food, which is also made possible with the use of better farm tools. The project was also highly welcomed because it is a gateway for efforts to be made in fighting the climate crisis at community level.
