Limited Access to Specialized Medical Services

Access to high quality, specialized healthcare services is very limited in Kasese district, western Uganda as well as in Uganda and Africa at large. Kule Lazarus was diagnosed with a heart defect at nine months, and his family tried with all their resources and means to ensure that he got proper care. A regional hospital, Mbarara Heart Institute, suggested that his condition could only be addressed fully with heart surgery at a medical facility in India. The family had no means to travel to India in order to obtain this critical care for Lazarus.

Addressing Critical Barriers to Healthcare Access

The donation from Luena Foundation was used to facilitate advanced care at Uganda Heart Institute (UHI) and to help process travel documents for Lazarus and his mother to pursue open heart surgery in India.
