Sanitation Needs Present a Barrier to Education

When the children in our primary school needed to relieve themselves they had to go out in the bush around the school to do it. The boys didn’t really care, but it was most difficult for the girls. To make matters worse, when the bigger girls were going through their cycles they did not generally have adequate sanitary products. So, most girls stayed at home for a week each month. Eventually they got so far behind that they just dropped out, and their chance at formal education came to an end.

New Toilet Block Supports Health and School Attendance

With the donation from Luena Foundation, we were able to construct a safe water toilet block in Bova Village public school to eliminate the practice of open defecation so that about 400 teachers and kids, especially girls, do not miss school and learning opportunities due to disease. The construction of the school toilet project is comprised of one toilet block, divided for teachers, girls, and boys as a safe sanitary place.

This campaign did not just help to build a toilet; it also enabled us to conduct educational workshops on sanitation to maintain the toilet. The expected impact of the campaign is better health, improved school attendance, and a reduction in school dropouts among the project villages.
